Throwing and dropping stones

Can stones only be thrown or also dropped just at the player's position?
Can the player determine how far to throw the stone?

You have to stand exactly in front of he most right socket.
Above the three sockets there are four objects which look similar and irritated me.
So the x position of the player is important.
I thought that standing 'somewhere' in front of the terminal would suffice...

I'm in New Washington on job 4 (repairing the terminal) and have collected the stone.
When using the computer card or the stone with the terminal nothing happens.
There is a socket for the computer card the player says, but it seems I can not use it with the card or the stone.
Then the autodestruction happens...

I have no idea how to help you since I played the game a couple of times 25 years ago or something but now I feel like giving it another try
